How to move the cable reel correctly?
The fiber optic cable has a brittle texture, so it needs to be carefully transported and moved.
The use of cable reels is one of the common ways of optical cable transportation. If the cable reel or optical cable packaging tray is too heavy to be carried by hand, you must use a forklift or cable mover to lift it to move the optical cable vertically. Do not let the cable reel fall from the vehicle to the ground. When removing the fiber optic cable reel from the vehicle, please use a tail lift/elevator (if installed) or a suitable mechanical auxiliary device, such as a forklift. In addition, when using a forklift to move or carry the cable reel, the operation must be appropriate to avoid damage to the optical cable. Do not directly touch the sheath of the cable reel with the fork of the forklift.
Some cable reels are long and heavy and can only be loaded and unloaded from transport vehicles by cranes. In this case, a long enough boom must be used to move it to prevent the flange of the cable reel from being compressed and damaging the optical cable.
Where should optical cables be stored?
Optical cables should be stored in a dry, ventilated and UV-proof place, such as a room or container. Choose a storage location with low humidity, no falling objects, no chemical spills (oil, grease, etc.), open flames or overheating risks.
When choosing a storage location, elements such as humidity and other contaminants should also be considered. The storage area of the optical cable should be flat and smooth. When the storage space is restricted, the space can be tidied and leveled, and then wood or bricks are stuffed on the front and back of the optical cable reel, and remember not to touch the optical cable.
In addition, the storage place of the optical cable needs to take effective measures to prevent moths or other harmful insects. If the fiber optic cable is stored outdoors, for example, in a place with a lot of rain, it is necessary to cover the fiber optic cable with a rainproof cloth to avoid long-term rain and cause the fiber optic cable to deform.
Note: Although the optical cable can be stored outdoors, the appearance of the optical cable reel may suffer weathering or other damage due to changes in weather. Therefore, it is recommended to store all optical cables indoors.
Four basic requirements for optical cable storage:
1. Seal and save
The label on the fiber optic cable reel must be sealed and stored, because the label contains important information, such as fiber optic cable usage instructions, attenuation value, bandwidth and cable length, etc. These parameters are important information about the fiber optic cable for future needs and need to be stored properly. .
2. Place the fiber optic cable reel on a flat place
When storing the optical cable, the optical cable needs to be placed in a flat place, the optical cable reel needs to be placed upright in a flat position, and the optical cable reel needs to be kept from moving randomly. Do not place the fiber optic cable reel on a flange, otherwise the fiber optic cable may be damaged during unwinding.
3. Protect the end of the optical cable
The protective cover of the fiber optic cable can prevent moisture from invading the end of the fiber optic cable, and they can protect the weakest and most sensitive part of the fiber optic cable. Once there is no protective cover, the optical cable will be exposed to the outside and may be contaminated, which also increases the risk of scratching and corrosion of the optical cable.
4. When replacing the optical cable reel, do not exceed the minimum bending radius
When rewinding the fiber optic cable to another reel, the diameter of the new fiber optic cable reel should not be less than the minimum bending radius of the fiber optic cable, otherwise it will damage the fiber optic cable and affect its performance. Note that when replacing a new optical cable reel, you need to affix the original cable label to facilitate future verification.
Precautions when using optical cables
For safety reasons, there are many places that need attention when storing or using optical cables, as shown below:
When storing optical cables, it is best to wear a disposable apron to reduce fiber particles on clothes and keep all food and beverages away from the work area. If there are too many fiber particles, it may cause internal damage to the optical cable.
Always wear special safety glasses, suitable helmets, safety belts and protective gloves. When using optical cables, do not touch your eyes.
Do not look directly into the optical cable unless there is no light source at the other end of the optical cable.
Only work in well-ventilated areas, and do not smoke when using optical cables.
After using the optical cable, wash your hands carefully.
Do not use isopropyl alcohol to clean the optical cable because it is flammable.
After storing the optical cable, its inspection and maintenance are also very important. Check for any damage to the optical cable during storage. If possible, check the condition of the optical cable protective cover first. If there is no protective cover, a heat shrinkable cap should be used to ensure that the optical cable is sealed and stored.
In addition to the precautions for storage, there are many points to pay attention to when installing or using optical fibers, such as avoiding large bending of the optical cable, avoiding pulling the optical cable forcefully, and protecting the optical cable from lightning.
