Introduction of WDM (Wavelength Division Multiplexing)


WDM(the Wavelength Division Multiplexing) is a technology that uses multiple lasers to simultaneously send multi-beam laser at different wavelengths. Each signal is transmitted within its unique color band after the data (text, voice, video, etc.) is modulated. The WDM can increase the capacity of existing optical fibre infrastructure for telephone companies and other operators. Manufacturers have launched WDM systems, also called DWDM (dense wavelength division multiplexing) systems.

DWDM can support more than 150 beams of different wavelengths at the same time, with each beam reaching up to 10Gb/s of data transmission rate. The system provides more than 1Tb/s of data transmission in a cable that is thinner than the hair.


Optical communication is a way of transmitting signals by light. In the field of optical communication, people are used to naming by the wavelength rather than by the frequency. Therefore, the so-called wave Division Multiplexing (WDM, Wavelength Division Multiplexing) is essentially a frequency Division Multiplexing. WDM is on 1 optical fiber carrying multiple wavelength (channel) system, turning 1 optical fiber into multi "virtual" fibers. Of course, each virtual fiber works independently on different wavelengths. It greatly improves the transmission capacity of optical fiber. Because of the economy and effectiveness of WDM system technology, it becomes the main means of the current expansion of optical fiber communication network. As a kind of system concept, WDM technology usually have three kinds of Multiplexing method, namely 1 310 nm and 1550 nm Wavelength of WDM, sparse Wavelength Division Multiplexing (CWDM, Coarse where Division Multiplexing) and Dense Wavelength Division Multiplexing (DWDM, Dense where Division Multiplexing).

A key advantage of DWDM is that its protocol and transport speed are irrelevant. Network based on DWDM can use IP, ATM, SONET/SDH and Ethernet protocol to transmit data, processing data flow between 100 Mb/s and 2.5 Gb/s. So, networks based on DWDM can transmit different types of data on one laser channel in different speeds. From the point of QoS (quality service) view, DWDM network is quickly responding to customers' bandwidth demands and protocol changes based on a low cost way. Take 1600G for example: in theory, a single optical fiber can take 160 10G operations when the fiber cable is fully available, Fiber utilization greatly improved. Of course, the requirement of fiber optic cable is very high, the theoretical value and the actual value are biased, in practical application, in order to avoid the failure rate, it is rarely to operate the business of 100 channels in the same fiber.
