2Africa, One Of The World's Largest Submarine Fiber Cable Projects, Is Planning To Build A Total Length Of 37000km

China Mobile International, Facebook, MTN GlobalConnect, Orange, stc, Egypt Telecom, Vodafone and WIOCC recently announced that they will jointly build 2Africa, which is the most comprehensive submarine optical cable serving the African continent and the Middle East, and will also connect through East Africa And other submarine cables to expand the connection with Asia.

2Africa, One Of The World's Largest Submarine Cable Projects

Currently, the developer has awarded Alcatel Submarine Network a contract to build the submarine cable to greatly enhance connectivity throughout Africa and the Middle East.

According to reports, 2Africa has a total length of 37,000 kilometers and will connect Europe (to the east through Egypt), the Middle East (via Saudi Arabia) and 21 landing sites in 16 African countries. 2Africa will provide much-needed Internet capacity and reliability in most parts of Africa, complement the rapidly growing capacity demand in the Middle East, and support the further growth of 5G and fixed broadband access.

2Africa Cable will implement a new technology, ASN's SDM1, which allows the deployment of up to 16 pairs of fiber instead of the 8 pairs supported by earlier technology, resulting in greater and more cost-effective capacity. The cable will use optical switching technology to achieve flexible management of bandwidth. The cable burial depth has also been increased by 50% compared to the old system, and cable routing will avoid known locations of subsea interference, all of which help ensure the highest level of availability.

According to the plan, the system will be put into use in April 2023, and its delivery volume will exceed the total capacity of all submarine cables serving Africa today. The design capacity of key parts of the system can reach up to 180Tbps. Once completed, it will be one of the largest submarine cable projects in the world.
