According to this plan, the planned digital submarine cable system connecting Asia and South America will connect Chile to Auckland in New Zealand and Sydney in Australia, with a total length of 13,000 kilometers. The full name is Asia-South America Digital Gateway.

In 2019, the Chilean Ministry of Transport and Telecommunications signed a US$3 million technical cooperation agreement with the Latin American Development Bank to help complete the feasibility study of a submarine optical cable system project connecting South America to Asia.

The government is expected to release the final report of the project research in the third quarter of 2020 and establish a special fund before the end of the year. The bidding for the submarine cable contract will begin in 2021.
