Guinea's Minister of Posts, Telecommunications and Digital Economy first announced plans to deploy a national fiber optic backbone network in February 2012.
Chinese company Huawei Technologies won a US $ 238 million contract for the construction of an optical fiber network in 2012.
According to reports, the network is called the national backbone network, and most of its construction funds come from concessional loans from the Export-Import Bank of China. Construction began in July 2015. Its purpose is to improve the domestic Internet infrastructure and the quality of domestic connections.
