NEC builds SJC2 fiber optic submarine cable

Recently, NEC announced that it will build a large-capacity optical fiber submarine cable connecting Japan, South Korea, China, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Vietnam, Thailand, Cambodia, and Singapore called "SJC2 (Southeast Asia-Japan Cable 2)." SJC2 is expected to be completed by 2020.

The total length of the SJC2 fiber optic submarine cable is approximately 10,500 kilometers. The latest technology using optical wave multiplex transmission at a wavelength of 100 Gbps per wavelength enables a design capacity of up to 144 Tbps per second. The currently operating SJC fiber optic submarine cable, together with this laying cable, will be able to respond to AI (artificial intelligence), IoT (Internet of things), VR (virtual reality) and other high-frequency broadband services to meet Southeast Asian and East Asian countries. The communication needs between the SJC2 optical fiber submarine cable will be an important backbone for promoting digitalization and technological innovation.
