Philippine Operator PLDT Is Negotiating 5G Communication Network Cooperation With Five Companies
According to media reports, Philippine telecom operator PLDT plans to launch 5G networks in the fourth quarter of this year, and is expected to secure its 5G network equipment suppliers by the end of the year. Manuel V. Pangilinan, chairman, president and CEO of PLDT, said last week that five companies are likely to be their 5G equipment suppliers. These companies are China's Huawei Technologies Co., Ltd. and ZTE Corporation, Sweden's Ericsson, Finland's Nokia, and Cisco Systems of the United States.
Last year, PLDT launched two 5G cellular base stations in Makati and Clark. The technical partners are Huawei and Ericsson.
Pangilinan said that PLDT may eventually reach an agreement with two technology suppliers to achieve 5G commercial release. He also pointed out that after the US government blacklisted Huawei on national security grounds, PLDT still kept in touch with Huawei.
